KENYA

context

Despite the huge progress that the Kenyan government has made economically, high levels of inequality still prevent many children from accessing a good quality education and reaching their full potential. Although there have been several successful interventions to enroll children in elementary education, poor education quality - especially in remote, rural areas - leaves learning outcomes low.

Agriculture also dominates Kenya’s economy, with 75% of working Kenyans making their living by farming. However, climate change is driving changeable and extreme weather that has a devastating impact on livelihoods, particularly for the most marginalized and vulnerable communities dependent on subsistence farming. This fluctuating income remains a significant barrier to children staying in school.

what we are doing

EDUCATING CHILDREN

For more than 20 years we have worked in rural communities where many families live below the poverty line, to ensure that every child has access to an education. We partner with remote rural communities to highlight the importance of education and improve access to and quality of education, through school improvements, teacher training and provision of teaching and learning resources.

EMPOWERING FAMILIES

We also work with rural communities to support them to transition from subsistence farming to agribusiness, with a genuine ability to compete on the open market. We provide high-tech agricultural training and tools, and support diversification of value chains, climate mitigation, formation cooperatives, access to capital, and connections with buyers and markets. As a result of their increased livelihoods, these families are able to ensure their children remain in school.
